Some Thoughts on Social Networking

Social media allow consumers to communicate their preferences to one another. If your business wants to reach the people that use these tools, setting up a Facebook page for your restaurant is not the way to go. Social media are most powerful when your business appears a genuine user recommendation. First and foremost, you have to offer them something of value: either your core product or service, or engaging content on your site. Then, you simply assist with or even encourage sharing with their own network. Building social bookmarking buttons into your site is not the hard part. Being relevant to the users of social networks is the key.
With traditional marketing, the company controls and disseminates its image. But social media are more like word of mouth. And like word of mouth, you simply have to make your company worth talking about, and facilitate that talking however you can.
